In a groundbreaking move, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is set to introduce a comparative literature class in winter 2025 that features a textbook, homework assignments, and TA resources generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative approach has been made possible through a collaboration between Professor Zrinka Stahuljak and Kudu, an ‘evolved’ textbook platform founded by Alexander Kusenko, a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA.
A Survey of Literature from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century
The class in question is a survey of literature from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. This course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the literary works that shaped Western culture during this period. The AI-generated materials, which include a textbook, homework assignments, and TA resources, are designed to facilitate a more engaging and interactive learning experience.
Kudu: An Evolved Textbook Platform
Kudu is an innovative platform that uses AI to generate customized textbooks, homework assignments, and teaching assistant (TA) resources. Founded by Professor Alexander Kusenko, the platform has been developed in collaboration with educators and experts in various fields. Kudu’s AI technology enables it to analyze vast amounts of data and generate high-quality educational materials that are tailored to meet the needs of individual students.
The Benefits of AI-Generated Course Materials
The use of AI-generated course materials at UCLA offers several benefits, including:
- Increased efficiency: The time commitment for professors is limited to 20 hours, freeing up more time for them to focus on teaching and student engagement.
- Improved consistency: AI-generated materials ensure that students receive a consistent learning experience, regardless of the professor or teaching assistant they interact with.
- Enhanced student support: Students can ask Kudu questions about the material, which provides answers drawn only from the provided course materials, rather than internet searches.
The Course Creation Process
To create the AI-generated materials for this class, Professor Stahuljak provided Kudu with notes, PowerPoint presentations, and YouTube videos from her previous versions of the class. The course creation process typically takes three to four months, but UCLA estimates that professors will only need to dedicate 20 hours to creating these materials.
A New Era in Education
The introduction of AI-generated course materials at UCLA marks a significant step towards revolutionizing the education sector. As educators continue to explore new ways to incorporate technology into their teaching practices, this innovative approach is likely to inspire similar initiatives across various institutions.
